tight tweeds and secret needs

weekend-er

Posted in style by portia on July 14th, 2008

The week’s ended. I hope I survive this week. Gonna be one hell of an insane marathon, before I fly off, since I have received a few work assignments. To top it off, I think I’m gonna be dead next semester given the non-school workload, brain research, graduation project and all. God bless my soul. I’m gonna be working like a bastard again, just like the way I did last year, the way I swore I would never repeat. My stomach’s a bit queasy thinking about it.

So one of the little delights/treats is to pop into a shop if only for a while, since I shop pretty fast, and don’t normally try on my clothes. I found this pretty sheath dress hanging on the racks in Mango, and knew I had to have it. With the prettiest flowers in outline, it’s got an old-fashioned twist that warmed my heart instantly. With only five minutes to spare, I took a deep breath, found the smallest size and paid for it.

Somehow the dress gives me The Chinese Girl look, which I do like.

Love the jade earrings. They’re so heavy I only dare to wear them when I’m going out for four hours or less.

faking a jumper-dress

Posted in style by portia on July 11th, 2008

Yay. I’m faking things. . again. So being The In-House Midget means that skirts that flatter The Mother look frumpily long(er) on me. Like I like to joke, ‘exquisitely dumpy’. I like the floral prints on this skirt– even if I hated it a good many years ago, I swear my hatred of florals, polka dots and lace is haunting me right-smack in the face, given me a bloody good slap. Karma, say I. I decided that the tie-waist portion could be tied around my neck instead, therein faking a dress. Yesterday was pretty rainy and cold, so I wore a tee rather than a wifebeater inside.

Yup, minimal accessories for yesterday. Alright, Happy Friday and have a glorious weekend, all!

tracking. .

Keeping track of photos in-itself is a bitch– they’re all jumbled up in my iPhoto. This was Saturday’s

I nearly died of shock when I walked past the fan and the entire dress blew upwards like an umbrella gone wrong in a wind too strong. Frantic, I grabbed stockings and a belt.

And just in case my mother had a heart attack upon seeing me go out this way, I decided to throw in a camisole. Lol.

lost child

Posted in style by portia on June 23rd, 2008

“But I want to sleep” I mumbled and protested into the phone. It’s Sunday, I’m tired and want to roll in bed. Anyhows I got my ass dragged out. In the most casual of casuals– a sign of protest– and to my shock horror, I went out in denim jeans. The last time I wore any pair of denim jeans was nowhere near the second half of 2007. Twisted-up hair. Eyebrow pencil, concealer, a loose top, a pair of earrings, skinnies, a bangle, a bag and a pair of wedges. Minimal for once. Couldn’t even be bothered to change laundre– I realize this lazy-to-change-laundre habit is fast becoming a Sunday Pattern. Bleah

Some of my favorite pathetic faces.

kimono prints

Posted in style by portia on June 21st, 2008

On the subject of re-wearing my hardly-worn stuff, and on the quest for wearing my entire collection of short skirts, I woke up deciding to wear this.

My mother’s knitted top that my uncle got for her at 16 from Hong Kong. It’s still going strong, and worn by me. What then, does one wear to dress up a miniskirt? My 4.5-inch high kimono-printed heels, of course.

Twisted my hair up nonsensically yet again. And found a flower corsage with feathers. Strapped a strand of satin ribbon twice around my neck and clipped it on.

my legs are tied

Delighted about my sneaker booties, I decided I’d wear them out on Saturday. It was sweltering as anything, therefore the skirt box was opened and I grabbed my skirt that I call The Stalin Skirt because its belt-like attachments make it look Russian in my delusional mind, coupled with its fringed hemline and waistline. Plus, it makes some soft chiming noise when I walk around in it. The pleats are absolutely adorable, and in essence, I love that skirt and am making excuses.

Love the pendant. It’s from Papau New Guinea, and extremely ornate with a marbled texture. Somebody gave it to my mother, and it’s part of the former’s family heirloom.

couldn’t help it but tie the laces around my ankle. bad habit since my days in school and I’d do that with my white canvas shoes.

hear me rawr

Posted in style by portia on June 16th, 2008

Can you not love animal print? I love it to bits, to tears and to death, because it appeals to the inner animal in me. Especially big cat prints. I was born in the Chinese Zodiac year of the Tiger and I have five cats. I love animals, especially cats. And hence, my inclination towards big cat prints. Tops, dresses, hair bands, bags, laundre, everything! I don’t think I’m the tamest person to begin with. . .

What then, is the difference between the fur markings of the cheetah, the leopard and the jaguar.

Well, here goes.

The cheetah, oft touted as the fastest animal in the world, has black spots of different sizes on its body. Although it has to be noted that they are known as the fastest animal based on sprints of short distances. These beautiful animals differ slightly from other large cats in that they hunt during the day.

The leopard has spots that kinda resembles that of a giraffe’s. These orange-ocher spots are outlined by thick broken lines that are black and/or dark-brown in color. Leopards are also known as panthers. Besides the orange ones, there are the black ones as well.

The jaguars, though, have black spots on their orange-ocher markings.

So I decided to re-wear my large satin cheetah-printed top, this time as a dress. Also, I wore them with their black elasticated sleeves out, to match the black accessories. Some quick snaps. .

top from BySi; belt from Mango; studded bangle from Dorothy Perkins; hairband from Forever 21; shoes from VNC

Prior to that, as usual, I was prancing around in my pinstripped shorts, and I decided that heck, for a hot weather look I might just tuck that top into a pair of shorts out.

shorts from Niichi; bangles from Forever 21; shoes from Bata

And so in the name of memories, I dug up some photos of old Cat Looks. .

left– earrings from Six; leopard print top from Mango; leopard print hairband from Aldo; jacket from Mango; pants from Zara

right– top from Mango; jeans from Mango; belt from Dorothy Perkins

The cheetah-print top earlier on. .

belt vintage; denim skirt gift; bangles vintage and gifts; earrings from Six

dressed down because I had school prior to that. .

belt is my mom’s; bag from Charles & Keith; capris from Osmose; earrings from Accessorize; bangles from Dorothy Perkins and vintage

And well, sometimes I cannot help but wear a thin belt around my neck.

And this lovely clutch that combines an assortment of different cat prints. Wheewy.

Shopping with The Best Friend must be the funnest thing ever. . I bet I’ll miss these times when I move abroad in about a year’s time. From squeezing into extremely crowded changing rooms during sales season, contacting each other about sales events, buying the same stuff unanimously to declaring, “Oh my God, I nearly wore that (insert item of clothing), she’s a bundle of fun. And a good person at heart too. She’s an uber-stylish girl who loves heels as much as I do, and with the sunniest smile ever.

Here, we were at Zara picking out clothes when we both grabbed the same dress. And had fun in the changing rooms. .

I absolutely adore the neckline of this dress. .and the empire-cut means. . Eat all you want to eat because who bloody cares.

It’s nice and short too. .meaning it’s purrfect to be worn with booties!

And by the time we were en route home, I said, “Oh God, do you realize we both bought the same dress and the same jacket!?”

It’s a good thing we give our stuff different twists, though.

cartoon heroes

Posted in style by portia on May 6th, 2008

Au contraire to the day before, I decided to give The Outfit a colorful devil-may-care spin with a Geek-meets-cartoon style. .

The tee’s actually something I wear at home quite often, to laze around in. And then to complete the geeky look, I threw in an old digital watch with rubber straps that has since stopped. My grandmother bought it for my cousins and myself a good many years ago.

The scarf is actually remnant material from the dress I slashed the other day in order to shorten it.

In the name of a clashing geeky look, I wore my pumps with candy-colored striped socks.
